Daffodils

The Beautiful Daffodils

The most common of the daffodil family are they yellow head with long green stems that grow in bunches, but from the thousands of varieties there are a few with impressive names such as ‘The Fair Maid Of Erin’, ‘Colleen Bawn’, ‘Fairies Gold’ and ‘Empress of Ireland’.

The daffodil plant thrives in Ireland’s moist climate and it blooms in early spring. The daffodil can be found in every park, woodland, riverbank, roadways, flower boxes and gardens. There are thousands of varieties of these beautiful flowers and as I am not a botanist or a gardener I will not even try and explain the difference.

  • You should always give a bunch of daffodils as a gift rather than a single flower as this will bring the receiver bad luck.
  • You should never stand on a daffodil as this will bring you bad luck.
  • You should always take extra care when plucking a daffodil from the earth as there may be a fairy underneath
  • You can actually talk to daffodils as they are great listeners.
  • You should always smile when you see a daffodils as this will make you happy.

Poem : Daffodils, William Wordsworth (7 April 1770 – 23 April 1850)

I wandered lonely as a Cloud

That floats on high o’er vales and Hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden Daffodils;

Beside the Lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the milky way,

They stretched in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay:

Ten thousand saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they

Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:-

A Poet could not but be gay

In such a jocund company:

I gazed—and gazed—but little thought

What wealth the show to me had brought:

For often when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude,

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the Daffodils.
