Every year on the 14th February millions of people around the world share in the same customs of showing their love and romance to their partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, husband or wife. The exchange of gifts, such as flowers, chocolates, jewelry and cards are also common, but why?
We have to go all the back to the 5th century when Pope Gelasius celebrated and honored St Valentine on the 14 February in the year 496. It is believed that Valentine was a true believer in love and married young couples at a time when it was not allowed as the Roman Emperor wanted his soldiers to be free of marriage to concentrate on warfare. When Claudius heard that St Valentine was disobeying his orders, he sent Valentine to prison before executing him in the year 297AD
There are many different stories and tales about St Valentine and some say that there was 3 different St Valentines who lived in 3 different countries. Can we ever be sure of where is was born? Can we know for sure the true stories of the man or can we just accept that he believed in love and that love can be shared.
Each year we celebrate love on the 14th February. To some people it may be childish but it others it is a day to remember, reflect, treasure and embrace. Which person are you?
